A Bizarre Society full of Philanthropy
I was so excited about going to Malawi, Africa. I planned everything weeks in advance, did my research online, read everything that I could about this African country, but nothing prepared me to what was in stock for me.
I can’t say that everything about this experience was great, but I can definitely say that, in all honesty, it was a unique, one of a kind experience that I wouldn’t want to trade for anything. But, what definitely marked this trip for me were African Fish Eagles. If you wanna know why, please keep reading. It’s an entertaining read, I promise!
Fish and Birds, Fish and Birds Everywhere
As I said, I did a lot of research about Malawi, Africa on my own and, naturally, I’ve come across a lot of articles on the web about Malawi’s flora and fauna. Needless to say, I’ve also come across a few articles about the African Fish Eagle, but I haven’t really read any of them fully. I mean, I sort of thought I’ll see a few of these beautiful birds in the sky, maybe snap a few photos with my iPhone and that’s pretty much it.
To be honest, I’m not really a fan of birds and this may sound crazy to some of you, but I am actually a bit scared of them. I don’t know why, but birds creep me out a little. I am an animal lover, I have a dog and a cat both of whom I love dearly, but birds? No thanks. Oh, and fish. I have never ever eaten fish in my entire life, let alone thought of having a fish as a pet or something. I find fish disgusting.
Now, as I write this, I realize how silly it sounds. How could I not see it at the time? The damn animal is called the African Fish Eagle, I should have known these birds would almost ruin my trip…but, I digress. Here’s what happened.
Flying Fish in Malawi, Africa
I went to Malawi with my family and I was very much looking forward to it. Like I already said, I’ve been researching everything about this country weeks prior, so I pretty much knew what to expect. I knew everything except for one thing – there are African Fish Eagles literally everywhere.
No matter where we were, they were up there in the sky, which was alright, except when we were close or next to water. If you ever go to Malawi, Africa, but you hate birds and fish – stay away from water. In fact, don’t even dare come near it. Sometimes, I had no idea if the fish were flying or if these birds were just messing with us and chucking them right in front of us!
These eagles would fly around and literally just drop fish right at our feet. One time I was just walking, minding my own business and trying to put my sun cream lotion on (I burn pretty fast) and as I was putting it on, I felt as if something was flying down from the sky and coming for me. Little did I know, it wasn’t even a bird. It was a fish an eagle had dropped and it landed just a few inches in front of me. If I was just one second faster, it would have landed right on my head and God knows what would have happened then.
Even my family (who are all animal lovers) got freaked out a lot during our trip. I forgot to mention this, a fish fell into my poor dad’s lap! Well, honestly at least we all got a good laugh out of that. He’s not the type of person to get scared or freaked out easily, but he screamed as loud as he could when that happened. The locals were laughing at us the whole time. I guess they’re used to this sort of thing but we are definitely not.
The Bottom Line: If You Like Birds and Fish Visit Malawi, Africa
What more is there to say? All that I can say is, all in all, we actually did have fun in Malawi, Africa and it was a crazy, unique experience that’s for sure but it is definitely not for everyone. If you want to see untouched nature and witness this bizarre combination of fish and birds, definitely consider visiting this country, but if, after reading my story, you don’t really know if Malawi should be your next destination, then definitely think twice, because this is definitely not an experience everyone would enjoy, no matter how fun it can be at times. Fish and Birds, Fish and Birds Everywhere!
